Umoja Learning Circle offers a comprehensive program which includes Math, Science, Language Arts, History, Integrated Arts, Social and Health Science, Music and Environmental Studies from Kindergarten to Grade 6.
At Umoja Learning Circle students learn critical life lessons through principles such as Faith, Self- Determination, Unity, Purpose, Respect, Collective Work and Responsibility, Consequence, Cooperative Economics, Reciprocity and Creativity.
Learning takes place in a family setting. Although the group is mixed, teaching is done on an individual level. Children’s development is based on ability not age/stage. The school’s wholistic approach encourages students to develop mentally, physically, socially as well as spiritually.
Diet and nutrition is part of the core curriculum. Students learn about the 5 new food groups and the role they play in nourishing and keeping their bodies healthy.
Afrikan drum, dance and Kiswahili are integral parts of the curriculum. Students learn and feel the importance of the drum and dance as part of our life.
Both educators are university graduates one having a Masters of Education and the other a Bachelor of Education with an Ontario Teachers certificate.
Homework
Assigned homework must be checked and initialed by parents before coming back to school.
Field Trips
Field Trips to various venues both supports curriculum and enhances students learning. Students utilize Public Libraries resources for projects. The school’s resources are supplemented by visits to art galleries, theatres, museums, science centers, cultural displays and exhibitions and various fairs and festivals.
